How do you handle an underperforming employee?

Everyone wants to have all employees running on all cylinders at all times. It would make everything so nice and easy. It would make serving customers and hitting budgets a no brainer. You could spend all your time adding value to others and focus on growth. But if this was the case, there would be no need for a manager. If you work with people at all, you know that at times they have issues. Those issues, whether personal or not, sometimes effect their job performance.
